Elbert de Hoog - Guitar
elbert

Name:
Elbert de Hoog

Birthday:

06 June

Hobbies:
Playing guitar (no, really), watching movies

Vices:
Chocolate and candy!

Musical background:
I started playing guitar when I was about 17 years old. As an autodidact, I learned mostly from listening and watching Iron Maiden records and videos. In the early days, I switched from guitar to bass back and forth, but after hearing Randy Rhoads playing “Crazy Train”, I knew that the guitar would be where it’s at! After a few years of practicing, I started playing in bands and later on started writing my own material. Before A New Dawn, I played in a few bands and learned a lot along the way. Now, I am happy putting all my energy in A New Dawn. I love this band!

Equipment:
- Epiphone Gothic Explorer with EMG 81 and EMG 85 pickups (the Mirjam-explorer);
- Epiphone G-1275 Double-Neck;
- RBC ND001 custom hand crafted electric guitar with EMG 81 and EMG 85 pickups and a Ghost piezo pickup;
- I play through an Ibanex TBX150H amplifier and a Marshall 1960A cabinet;
- As a floorboard I use a Line 6 PODxt Live

Idols in music:
Randy Rhoads (R.I.P.), Criss Oliva (R.I.P.), Brian May

Idols in life:
My parents, my brother and my girlfriend

Life philosophy:
Do good to others, and good things will come to you.

Place you would like to go:
Heaven, but not until I’m dead. When I’m still alive, I love visiting the U.S.A.

What makes you laugh:
Well, there’s a few comedians, that make me laugh when I even think of them!

First record you bought:
An Elvis Presley compilation album

All time top 5 albums:
Changes from time to time, but I think it should look something like this:
Ozzy Osbourne – Tribute
Queen – Live Killers
Savatage – Streets
Iron Maiden – Live After Death
Metallica – Master Of Puppets

Preparation for a show:
I like to prepare quietly before a show. Play a few bits to warm up and just trying to relax a little.

Strangest experience with A New Dawn:
Can’t really think of anything “strange”. And then again, what may be normal for one person can really be strange to the other, right?

Worst nightmare on stage:
Performing without having any fun in playing (never happened).

Favorite A New Dawn song:
The new one, of course! Besides that one, at this moment, it will probably be “Winter” or “Ascension”. I love the somewhat more complex compositions the best.

Worst nightmare in general:
Having to loose the people I love.

Favorite band/musician:
Can’t pick just one. Favorite bands are Savatage, Iron Maiden, Queen and Kiss. Favorite musicians are Criss Oliva, Randy Rhoads, Brian May and Steve Harris. Just to name a few.

Favorite book:
Tom Clancy novels. I also like reading biographies.

Favorite drink:
Diet Coke and Dr. Pepper

Favorite food:
People call me a trashcan. Does that answer your question?

Favorite animal:
Our lovely cats.

Favorite movie:
There’s a whole bunch. I like Quentin Tarantino movies, Kevin Smith movies, the Star Wars movies, and many, many more!

Favorite TV show:
C.S.I. (all of them), Friends, Seinfeld (again, just to name a few)

A quote you really love:
I’ll be right there, I’ll never leave, all I ask of you is believe (from Savatage’s “Believe”).
